A Scenic Journey Through Country Victoria and South Australia

Discover the beauty and diversity of country Victoria and South Australia on this seven-day National Seniors Travel coach tour from Melbourne.

Leaving behind Melbourne, Australia’s second largest city, the rolling hills of Victoria’s western district beckons. Enjoy a trip down memory lane in Hamilton, birthplace of Sir Reginald Ansett, with a visit to the museum named in his honour created from the original hangar of Ansett Airlines Australia. It’s then across the SA border to Mount Gambier, home for the next four nights, to explore the magnificence of the limestone coast.

Geological wonders and coastal dreams
First up, it’s off to marvel at the intense colour of the aptly named Blue Lake, amble through Umpherston, once a cave, now a really truly sunken garden, and admire the fine architecture and history of the Old Court House. A barbecue dinner sunset cruise along the stunning Glenelg River tops off a top day.

The following morning is all about stepping back in time to understand the amazing work of Saint Mary MacKillop at the interpretive centre in Penola, and wander along Petticoat Lane for an insight into pioneer life. From here, the Wonambi Fossil Centre will transport you back even further, with the option of heading underground for a tour of Alexander Cave. Wine lovers will be in their element on the drive through the famed Coonawarra, complete with a tasting experience at Wynns. Highlights of the region continue the next day with a visit to the Millicent Museum, filled with an exquisite collection of all things horse-drawn, and strolling the heritage trail around the charming seaside village of Robe.

A whale of a time
Back on Victorian soil, an overnighter in Portland, is where you’ll step inside the skeleton of a sperm whale, ride a tram through the Botanical Gardens and take in 360° views of the Shipwreck Coast from the glassed-in deck of the WWII Memorial Lookout. Share stories over sunset drinks at Cape Nelson lighthouse followed by a farewell dinner at Richmond Grand Hotel. Enroute to Melbourne you’ll stop at Treloar Roses Display Garden to ‘smell the roses’. Literally.
