A 59-year-old man has been charged after the Anzac War Memorial in Sydney’s Hyde Park was damaged last month.
Officers attached to Sydney City Police Area Command commenced an investigation on Friday 26 September following reports of malicious damage at the Anzac Memorial the previous day.
Police were told that at around 2.40pm on Thursday 25 September, an unknown man entered the memorial and poured small amounts of an oil-like liquid onto stones throughout the structure, before also pouring liquid onto a metal Anzac memorial plaque and leaving the scene.
Despite efforts from caretakers to remove the liquid the memorial remains damaged, Police said.
Following a public appeal for assistance, a man attended Day Street Police Station at 5pm yesterday, where he was placed under arrest.
The man was charged with destroy or damage property and granted conditional bail to appear at the Downing Centre Local Court on 19 November.
