50-year-old fountain flows afresh

A fountain built by the Euroa Leo Club and donated to the Euroa Swimming Pool 50 years ago has been unveiled to the public with a new lease on life.

The fountain and surrounds were upgraded over the winter period, marking a historical moment for the pool.

Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor, Laura Binks explained how the now disbanded Leo Club was restricted to members aged 15 to 21 years.

An excerpt from The Euroa Gazette, Wednesday January 24, 1973, reported on the handover which took place on Sunday December 17, 1972.

The article described the fountain as being placed in “an eye-catching position”.

“The fountain refurbishments have sparked many memories of the fountain over the past 50 years and it is a wonderful link to our community history,” Cr Binks said.

“The dedicated Leo members who worked on the project have many memories of the fountain and it was fantastic to see some of them return for the unveiling of the restoration.”

The event was celebrated with a sausage sizzle and live music provided through Council’s FReeZA program featuring local acts.

Council received grant funding from the State Government’s Local Road and Community Infrastructure Program (LRCIP) which went toward several Council projects including footpaths.

“The new area features the refurbished original fountain and we improved the amenities around it so it could be appreciated for the years to come and wasn’t lost underneath the heavy vines that were also removed for safety reasons,” Cr Binks said.

“The upgrade also included two new electric barbecues and tables and chairs, making the pool an inviting entertainment area.

“The barbecues are free to use for those at the pool. Simply bring your own food along to use the facilities over the summer.”

The upgrades were unveiled at a special ceremony on December 1, 2022, which also marked the beginning of the 2022/23 outdoor pool season.

The event was a chance for all who have been involved in the site to come together, including members of the Euroa Garden Club who have maintained the garden over the years.

“Our pools are now open and we’re reminding ratepayers that they can access their free season pass from the bottom of their rates notice,” Cr Binks said.
