Homicide Squad detectives have arrested a woman over the alleged murder of 77-year-old man, Peter McCarthy, in Sydney’s east last month.
Police say that at around 11.20am on Sunday, December 20, emergency services were called to a unit on Elphinstone Road, South Coogee, after concerns were raised for the welfare of a male occupant.
Inside the unit they discovered the body of the retired solicitor with severe facial and head injuries, in what Homicide Squad Commander Danny Doherty described as a “robbery that’s turned into a brutal and severe bashing”.
“Local police commenced inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death, before detectives from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad took carriage of the investigation under Strike Force Airy,” said NSW Police.
“Following extensive investigations and a public appeal for information, strike force detectives, with assistance from the Central Metropolitan Region Operations Support Group (OSG), arrested a 46-year-old woman at a unit at Elphinstone Road, South Coogee, just before 1pm today.”
“A search warrant was subsequently executed and is currently underway at the unit.”
The woman has been taken to Maroubra Police Station, where charges are expected to be laid.
