The WA Government has awarded more than $7 million to Uniting WA to develop a transitional accommodation service for women over 55 who are experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness at their property in Fremantle.
“Our Government recognises the critical role Uniting WA plays in supporting some of the most vulnerable members of our community and we’re deeply proud to provide more than $7 million so they can continue this important work,” said Housing and Homelessness Minister, John Carey.
The Minister confirmed Historic Wyn Carr House will be refurbished and expanded to accommodate office space, support services and 12 bedrooms with a total of $7,090,228 funding delivered through:
- $4,202,045 from the Cook Government Community Housing New Build grant;
- $819,925 from the Cook Government Community Housing Refurbishment grant; and
- $2,068,258 in Lotterywest grant funding.
Eleven of the bedrooms will include a dedicated ensuite, and one room will be disability accessible with an accessible ensuite.
The ground floor will provide kitchen and laundry amenities for residents, and will include living spaces, a shared computer room and individual food lockers.
“I’m proud to be part of the Cook Labor Government as we continue to provide critical support to the most vulnerable members of the Fremantle community, with a $7 million commitment to Uniting WA,” said Fremantle MLA, Simone McGurk.
“Uniting WA is an experienced and effective service provider and I’m glad this funding will support their efforts to assist those who need it the most.”
The development is being constructed by Western Projects and is expected to reach completion by late 2025.
