What is the Assistive Technology and Home Modifications Scheme?

It’s a new scheme launched under the Support at Home program for elderly Australians designed to make everyday life easier to help seniors maintain their independence at home.

Under the Australian Government’s new Support at Home Program, older Australians can now access dedicated funding for Assistive Technology and Home Modifications (AT-HM) — helping them live safely and independently in the comfort of their own homes.

This new AT-HM funding pool gives eligible clients access to up to $15,000 for approved equipment or modifications that support daily living, improve mobility, or reduce the risk of injury. It’s a simple, practical way to make homes more accessible and life more manageable.

What Counts as Assistive Technology?

Assistive Technology includes a wide range of devices and equipment that help people complete everyday tasks safely. These might include mobility aids like walkers and wheelchairs, personal alarms, adjustable beds, pressure-relief cushions, or even technology such as voice-activated lights and reminder systems.
Every piece of technology is designed to support independence and empower older Australians to continue doing the things they love — from cooking a meal to enjoying time in the garden.

What Are Home Modifications?

Home modifications focus on adapting the physical environment to improve safety and accessibility. This could mean installing handrails, ramps, or non-slip flooring, widening doorways, or redesigning a bathroom for easier access.
Under the Support at Home model, these changes are tailored to each person’s needs following an assessment, ensuring that the right supports are in place for safe, confident living.

How the Funding Works

Clients who qualify for AT-HM can use their dedicated funding pool — separate from their quarterly care budget — to purchase or install approved items and modifications. The goal is to prevent falls, maintain mobility, and delay or avoid hospital or residential care by creating safer, more functional living spaces.
