Brisbane residents looking to clear their homes of hazardous waste can head to the Nudgee Resource Recovery Centre this weekend for the final free drop-off day of the year.
Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner said between 7:30am and 3:30pm on Saturday December 3, residents can dispose of hazardous household waste including brake fluid, pool chemicals, petrol and marine fuel, as well as insecticides for no charge.
Cr Schrinner said the free drop-off days encourage the safe disposal of these toxic chemicals and products.
“I am determined to ensure Brisbane continues to be Australia’s cleanest, greenest and most sustainable city,” he said.
“That’s why we look after our parks and public places, ensure we take a practical approach to the environment by doing things like planting water-smart streets trees and investing in transformative projects, like the fully-electric Brisbane Metro.
“Another big part of our approach is doing what we can to help residents be more sustainable at home.
“One of the many ways we do that is through our free hazardous waste disposal days.
“Household hazardous waste are frequently corrosive, flammable, explosive, toxic or poisonous and often people are unaware of how to dispose of them appropriately.
“These items can be fatal if inhaled or consumed and can endanger residents’ homes or the environment if they leak.
“We also don’t want this waste illegally dumped or ending up in garbage trucks which can cause fires.
“So I’m encouraging residents to take advantage of this free service and clean out dangerous waste before Christmas.”
Residents must ensure:
- All household hazardous waste items being disposed remain in their original containers and are not mixed/
- Be aware that a 20-litre limit per customer per visit applies for each chemical or product, except for paint and engine oil (hydrocarbon oil) where up to 100 litres per customer per visit is accepted.
