WA drivers snap up nostalgia number plates

Western Australian drivers are set to wind back the clock on the state’s motoring history, with the new Nostalgia optional plate series available to purchase from www.plateswa.com from midday today.

After calling for expressions of interest for the remake of the iconic black on yellow or black on white plates originally issued between 1978 and 1997, an impressive 916 EOIs were submitted by the WA motoring public.

One Western Australian driver has ordered 17 Nostalgia plates of differing combinations, while it was bad luck for those who submitted an EOI for the most requested combination of 8BB888 with the plate already in circulation on a WA-registered vehicle.

“Western Australian drivers can now enjoy a slice of history, winding back the clock to represent a special time in your life,” said Minister Assisting the Transport Minister, Jessica Stojkovski.

“Whether it was the plate of your first car, your parents’ or grandparents’ car or a number relating to your classic car, you can soak up the memories and display it proudly.

“Western Australians love to make our vehicles stand out and this is the perfect opportunity to be a little different to other vehicles on the road.”

The Nostalgia series celebrates and reconnects drivers in 2025 with Western Australia’s motoring heritage, while addressing customer requests for iconic WA plate designs to be available as an optional plate.

Currently, the original black on yellow or black on white State plates still in circulation on vehicles cannot be remade if they are lost or stolen.

Drivers who have a State plate in the same format as the Nostalgia series can now convert it to an optional plate for $289.

As an optional plate, drivers have the right to display or trade the Nostalgia series, and have it remade if lost, stolen or damaged.
