River Heads man, 84, killed in hit-and-run

A 25-year-old unlicensed driver has been charged following the alleged hit-and-run death of an 84-year-old man yesterday.

Police will allege that at around 2.30pm, the elderly man was riding a mobility scooter on Ariadne St, River Heads, when he was struck by a green sedan.

“The alleged driver of the sedan, a 25-year-old Pialba man, fled the scene with the damaged vehicle and was arrested by police three hours later following an exhaustive search,” Queensland Police said in a statement.

“The 84-year-old was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

The 25-year-old has been charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death, fail to remain at scene with callous disregard and drive unlicensed and is due to appear in the Hervey Bay Magistrates Court December 16.

The Forensic Crash Unit is calling for any witnesses to the crash, or anyone who may have dash-cam footage of the green sedan, to contact police.
