Police investigate overnight explosions

Victoria Police are investigating a series of explosions that occurred in Northcote, Ivanhoe and East Kew last night.

Police say witnesses have reported hearing loud explosion noises in the vicinity of James Street, Northcote at around 8.25pm on Sunday night.

“The second incident occurred in Maltravers Road, Ivanhoe just before 9pm. Officers attended both locations and located a number of rubbish bins and letterboxes that had been destroyed,” Victoria Police said in a statement.

“A third incident occurred after an explosive device was placed inside a washing machine that was on the back of a utility parked in Kilby Road, East Kew about 9.10pm.”

Police say the vehicle sustained extensive damage and was towed to undergo forensic examination by specialist officers.

“No one was injured during any of the incidents and the investigation is ongoing.”

Detectives from Darebin Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) will work with detectives from Boroondara and Banyule CIUs to establish if the incidents are linked.
