Police ‘gobsmacked’ by speeding drunk driver

Victorian Police have been left “gobsmacked” by a driver speeding at more than 100km/h over the limit while also being almost three times over the legal alcohol limit in St Kilda in the early hours of this morning.

Prahran Highway Patrol first spotted the motorist travelling speeding towards the city on Beaconsfield Parade around 1.50am.

The Port Melbourne driver was intercepted by police and arrested for conduct endangering life after exceeding the 60km/h speed limit by more than 100km/h.

He also returned a positive breath test before furnishing an evidentiary breath test reading of .136.

The man’s car was impounded, and his licence suspended.

It is expected the 25-year-old will be charged with conduct endangering life, excessive speed and other traffic related offences.

Prahran Highway Patrol Senior Constable Tyson Kosmina said the motorists driving was just beyond belief.

“I’m gobsmacked,” Sen Const Kosmina said.

“The fact he was driving at that speed with other traffic around is bad enough but to be more than two and a half times over the limit is unbelievable.

“This was a fatal collision in the making and I am so glad we were able to prevent that from happening.”

The arrest is part of Operation Compass, a road policing operation aimed at keeping the community safe on Victorian roads.
