Navigating aged care can feel overwhelming, but support is available — and it all starts with applying for a Home Care Package (HCP).
A HCP is a government-funded program that helps older Australians remain independent at home for as long as possible. There are four levels of funding based on your needs, covering services like domestic help, personal care, transport, nursing, and more.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you access the care you deserve:
Step 1: Register with My Aged Care
To begin, you must register with My Aged Care (www.myagedcare.gov.au or 1800 200 422). They will ask a few simple questions about your health and daily activities.

Step 2: ACAT Assessment
You’ll then have an in-person assessment from an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT). Based on your situation, they’ll recommend a level of care:
– HCP Level 1–4: Suitable for people needing moderate to high support
– CHSP: For those with lower, entry-level needs
You may also need to complete an income assessment to determine if you’ll need to
pay a government-set contribution.
Step 3: Waitlist Period
If approved for a HCP, you’ll join the national waitlist. This can take between 6–18 months. You’ll receive updates along the way, including a referral code when your funding becomes available.
