P-plater caught at 215km/h

Police have impounded a P-plate driver’s car after he was caught doing 215km/h in Dromana in the early hours of this morning.

“Somerville Highway Patrol members were conducting speed checks in the north-bound lanes of the Mornington Peninsula Freeway when the sound of a speeding vehicle approaching south-bound caught their attention shortly after midnight,” Victoria Police said in a statement.

Police say officers clocked the Volkswagen Golf GTI allegedly travelling at more than double the 100km/h speed limit.

“The driver, an 18-year-old man from Mill Park, offered no explanation for the excessive speed,” Police said.

His vehicle has been impounded for 30 days and he is expected to be charged with speeding offences.

In a busy night for highway patrol officers, less than 90 minutes later the same patrol unit clocked a vehicle travelling at 172km/h.

The 37-year-old male driver, from McCrae, also lost his wheels for 30 days and can expect to front the courts for speeding.
