Southern Cross Care Queensland has been awarded $50 million under the Australian Government’s Aged Care Capital Assistance Program (ACCAP) for capital works for a new residential aged care home in Broken Hill.
The funding is the largest grant awarded under the program and the most significant funding provided to any aged care provider in this round.
Southern Cross Care CEO, Jason Eldering (pictured, right, during a visit to a Southern Cross Care facility) said the investment will transform aged care services in the region.
“Several of our existing facilities are in dire need of capital investment, particularly Aruma Lodge, which is approaching the end of its operational life. This funding allows us to invest in a brand-new residential aged care home as well as community facilities,” said Mr Eldering.
“This is an incredible day for the Broken Hill community. We are deeply grateful to the Federal Government for entrusting us with this
opportunity and are honoured to act as stewards for such an important project. Our vision is to grow communities where best lives are lived, and this funding gives us the opportunity to make that vision a reality in Broken Hill.”
Mr Eldering thanked the community groups who have been part of the funding application process, providing valuable input and guidance along the way, and particularly acknowledged the advocacy work of Jamie Chaffey MP, along with Broken Hill Base Hospital, Broken Hill City Council and Thrive Medical.
“This funding is a game-changer for Broken Hill. It means our aged residents will have access to quality care and accommodation locally, and it also means jobs for our people,” said Mr Chaffey.
“And it means our community is stronger, more connected, and more hopeful. I’m proud to have worked alongside Southern Cross Care in making this possible.”
While timelines are yet to be determined as design, site requirements and approvals are progressed, Southern Cross Care says it is committed to transparency, collaboration and keeping the community informed every step of the way.
“Our approach is always to listen first and ensure we are guided by the voices of the community to deliver the best outcome,” said Mr Eldering.
