Man sought over shooting of 50-year-old man

NSW Police detectives have released an image of a man wanted in relation to the shooting of a 50-year-old man in Wollongong earlier this year.

Police say that just before 9pm on Tuesday 24 March this year, a 50-year-old man entered a stairwell of a unit complex on Market Street, Wollongong and was approached by two men who were armed with a hammer and firearm.

They say that as the man attempted to walk past the pair, he was assaulted and shot in the leg. The two men then ran from the complex and fled the scene in a vehicle parked nearby. 

The injured man was treated at the scene before being taken to Wollongong Hospital for treatment to a bullet wound to his knee. 

Officers from Wollongong Police District established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Following extensive inquiries, a 21-year-old man was arrested and charged in relation to the incident on Friday 12 June. He remains bail refused, and his next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday 16 September 2020.

As inquiries continue, police are appealing for help from the public to identify a man who may be able to assist with inquiries. 

The man was seen outside the City Beach Motel on the corner of Crown Street and Harbour Street, Wollongong, about midday on Wednesday 25 March 2020. He was wearing red shorts, a grey top and grey baseball cap, and is believed to have entered a silver Commodore sedan.
