A 45-year-old man has been charged after the death of a 74-year-old married father of six following an alleged assault in Sydney’s southwest over the weekend.
In a statement, NSW Police said that at around 4.40am on Saturday, emergency services were called to Orchardleigh Street in Yennora, following reports that a man was found unconscious.
“NSW Ambulance paramedics attended and treated a 74-year-old man at the scene, before he was taken to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition,” Police said.
“Initial inquiries have led police to believe the man was allegedly assaulted while on his regular morning walk; however, investigators were unable to speak with the man.”
Following the incident, officers attached to Fairfield City Police Area Command established a crime scene and commenced Strike Force Furena to investigate the incident.
At around 2pm the following day, detectives and Riot Squad officers executed a search warrant at an address in Carlingford, seizing several items believed to be linked to the incident.
Yesterday, Police were informed that the 74-year-old man had died in hospital.
A 45-year-old man was arrested for an outstanding warrant at a Carlingford address and taken to Parramatta Police Station where he was charged with murder and cause wounding/grievous bodily harm to person with intent to murder.
He was also charged with common assault for an unrelated incident in Guildford earlier this month.
The man was refused bail to appear before Parramatta Local Court today.
