Man, 63, arrested over 1991 death of Melinda Freeman

Detectives from the Victoria Police Homicide Squad have today charged a 63-year-old man as part of their investigation into the 1991 death of Melinda Freeman in Whittlesea.

The Greensborough man was arrested in Greensborough this morning and subsequently interviewed by police.

He has been charged with murder and will face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today.

In a statement, Victoria Police said they believe the man was known to Melinda (pictured).

Today’s arrest follows an incident on 4 October, 1991 where Melinda was located dead about 11.30pm inside her Yea Road home in Whittlesea. Police say the 27-year-old had been fatally assaulted.

Over the past three decades, Police and Melinda’s family have made a number of public appeals for information in relation to her death.

In February 2022, Victoria Police announced a $1 million reward in relation to the case.
