Townsville City Council is encouraging residents in low-lying areas to take precautions ahead of the king tides expected from this weekend.
The king tide is forecast to reach 3.79m at 8:23am on Sunday 12 January, with further king tides up to 3.85m on Monday 13 January and 3.81m at 9:38am on Tuesday 14 January, the Council said in a statement.
“Tides will continue to peak to above 3m until the afternoon of Friday 17 January,” the Council says.
“Council recommends residents in areas that are prone to minor flooding during high tides take necessary precautions.
“Suburbs like South Townsville and Railway Estate may be impacted, along with Hanran Street and Ogden Street in the city.”
Motorists are also being asked to observe any warnings and road closures.
