An investigation is underway after a 73-year-old woman was viciously assaulted during a home invasion in the Illawarra earlier today.
Police say that at around 7am, officers were called to a home on Fitzwilliam Street, Port Kembla, following reports of a break-in.
“Police have been told an unknown man forced entry to the home and assaulted the occupant, a 73-year-old woman,” NSW Police said in a statement.
“A male neighbour, aged in his 40s, came to assist and was also assaulted.
“The man fled on foot empty-handed. Both residents have been taken to hospital with minor injuries.”
A crime scene was established and detectives from Lake Illawarra Police District have commenced inquiries.
“As investigations continue, detectives are appealing for anyone who may have seen a man in the area around the time of the incident,” NSW Police said.
He is described as being of Caucasian appearance, aged in his 30s and wearing dark clothing and a dark face mask.
