57-year-old dies after street assault

A man has been charged with murder following the fatal bashing of a 57-year-old man in Sydney’s Inner West yesterday.

Police say that at about 8.50pm on Sunday night, emergency services were called to the front of a unit block on Swanson Street, Erskineville, after reports that two men were involved in a physical altercation.

When police arrived, a 57-year-old man was found suffering head and facial injuries.

He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics; however, he died a short time later.

The second man fled the scene prior to the arrival of police.

Officers from South Sydney Police Area Command, with assistance from Inner West Police Area Command, established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Following their inquiries, a 28-year-old man was arrested at a nearby unit block on Swanson Street in the early hours of this morning.

He was taken to Mascot Police Station and charged with murder. The Erskineville man was refused bail to appear at Central Local Court later today.
