Truckie and hidden passenger cop $8,000 fines

Queensland Police have fined a truck driver and his passenger – who was discovered hiding under a blanket – with more than $8,000 in fines for breaching COVID-19 health rules as they attempted to enter the state.

Police say that at around 7.30pm last night, a B-Double heavy transport vehicle was intercepted at the M1 Vehicle Checkpoint at Tugun entering from NSW.

“As police interviewed the driver, an officer observed a female hiding under a blanket in the back cab of the vehicle,” Queensland Police said in a statement.

Both the driver and passenger were issued COVID Person Infringement Notices ($4,135) for breaching the Chief Health Officer Directions.

Police also found illicit drugs onboard the vehicle.

“The driver’s ‘Freight’ pass was revoked, proceedings were commenced for multiple offences including Notices to Appear in court for drug driving, possessing dangerous drugs, failing to dispose of seven syringes, and Traffic Infringement Notices (TIN) for Log Book offences of exceeding work hours (Critical breach),” Police said.

The passenger was also issued a TIN for failing to wear seatbelt.

The driver and female were transported to the Griffiths Street Border crossing and given a direction to leave Queensland.
