Survey seeks older Australian experiences of the pandemic

Got time for a survey? Deakin University is seeking older Australians to take part in a survey about how COVID-19 has affected their health and mental wellness.

The survey consists of four 30-minute online questionnaires. Questions relate to:

  • Demographics (age, gender, postcode, education, relationship status, employment status, living situation).
  • COVID-19 impacts on lifestyle, employment, finances, and health.
  • Mental health, loneliness, financial stress, substance use and subjective well-being.
  • Pet ownership, pet care behaviours, and pet attachment (for pet owners).

“All participants may benefit from this study by gaining insight into and reflecting on their own health-related beliefs and behaviours,” the University said in a statement.

“Knowledge generated by this research may benefit health practitioners and researchers by broadening their understanding of predictors of loneliness and poor mental health.”

“The community may also benefit from this research through improved education about behaviours affecting their physical and mental health.”

Participants will also be offered the chance enter a prize draw to win one of two $50 Coles e-vouchers after completing each round of the survey and voluntarily providing a contact email address (collected and stored separately to participant responses to maintain anonymity and confidentiality of responses).

The prize draw will occur after each round of data collection is completed (October 2020, February 2020, June 2021, and October 2021) and winners will be notified via email.

This research is funded by the Faculty of Health, Deakin University. The Student Researcher, Kirrily Zablan (Doctoral Candidate), is supported by an Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarship.
