Beating loneliness, one fork at a time

The second annual Queensland Seniors Month, 1-31 October, is in full swing and celebrating with the continued theme of Social Connections.

“With more than 1,500 events and activities on offer, this year’s calendar is just as diverse as the people attending the events” said Seniors Month Coordinator at COTA Queensland, Lisa Hodgkinson.

“Each year we create a people powered project which aims to connect and celebrate the diversity of older Queenslanders.”

Did you know that 1 in 3 older adults have reported feeling lonely?  Or that 1 in 3 live alone and are increases risk for social isolation and/or loneliness?

“That’s a lot of people who may be feeling lonely and/or socially disconnected, and we want to change that,” says Ms Hodgkinson.

“Thinking about the thing that connect us food is generally at the top of the list.  The wonderful thing about food is that it has the ability to surpass physical and language barriers, allowing us to share our stories of life, culture, and creativity.

“The Sunday Roast has long been a tradition in Australian Households and we’re looking to create Queensland’s Largest Sunday Roast.”

On Sunday 16 October, Queenslanders of all ages are invited to come together and connect over a Sunday Roast meal, creating Queensland’s Largest Roast.

You can get involved by:

  • hosting a roast at home or at your local park with family, friends, and neighbours.
  • attending a roast dinner at a participating restaurant.

Find out more and take part by registering your roast at LargestRoast.au.
