Celebrating the ‘art’ of ageing

The NSW Government’s Art of Ageing photographic exhibition is rolling on amid the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the diversity of Australia’s over-50 population through a beautiful series of shots captured by Australian photographers.

The exhibition opened in State parliament in March and is set to travel to more than 47 city and regional locations throughout NSW over the next two years.

Given the changing public health measures since March, curators have now taken the exhibition online, making it available to all Australians.

“Our community is changing. We are getting older. We are living longer than ever before. By 2031, one in three people in NSW will be aged 50 or over,” said a spokesperson for the exhibition.

“But older people aren’t all the same. Like the rest of the community, they live diverse lives. How they experience ageing, and how they want to age is unique.

“Each photograph is accompanied by a story from the photographed participants highlighting their experiences and reflections on ageing. The photographs and stories celebrate the value, experience and contribution older people bring, and challenge out-dated perceptions of ageing.”

The exhibition is part of the government’s NSW Ageing Strategy and seeks to celebrate the contribution that older people make to the communities they live in.

The exhibition was recently relaunched at Sutherland Library in Sydney, where it will be housed until 28 October.

The stunning photographic exhibition includes photographs from well-known photographers Julie Slavin, Kerri Ambler, Tim White and Goulburn’s Tina Milson.
