Australian males suffering from stress urinary incontinence now have access to a new and advanced artificial urinary sphincter, inserted for the first time in the Southern Hemisphere at Ramsay Health Care’s Greenslopes Private Hospital in Brisbane.
Urologist Professor, Eric Chung performed the surgery to insert the Rigicon Conti Classic artificial urinary sphincter, which is designed to help patients regain not only their continence but, importantly, to restore their quality of life.
“The RigiconContiClassicdevice provides the surgeon the ability to individualise antibiotics selection, offers more cuff size choices and makes an easier connection between the device components compared to other urinary sphincter devices on the market,” Dr Chung said.
“Once patients with incontinence issues are fitted with an artificial urinary sphincter, they’re no longer constrained by incontinence pads and can exercise and undertake normal social interactions without the fear of wet pants or malodorous smell.”
The first patient in the country to benefit from the RigiconContiClassic artificial urinary sphincter was a 69-year-old man who developed urinary incontinence following a radical prostatectomy.
