The history of post-settlement Albury is now being told along a walk that celebrates the work of local State MPs over a period of 147 years.
The State Members Walk honours the contribution of 26 Members of Parliament between 1856 and 2003, with the story of each MP told in an etched image and description of their achievements, Albury City Council said in a statement today.
“The walk, which follows the eastern footpath adjacent to the Hume Highway from Amatex Street to the Harold Mair Bridge, charts the course of European history in Albury and recognises major changes in the city, ranging from the introduction of paddle steamers to the development of new schools and hospitals.”
“Many of the members’ names are preserved today through the naming of streets and structures across the city,” Council said.
The Members are in chronological order, beginning with Sir George Macleay in 1856 and represents 26 past State Members from the region. It gives a fascinating insight into the European history of the area over the past 165 years.
“This tells the story of where each man come from and the often-interesting ways they arrived in Albury, as well as their major achievements during their time in office. Many of their names are recognisable from the street names and bridges around town that take their name from these significant members of Albury’s past,” Council said.
“Along this Walk you can read about the significant changes to the city through the ages, from paddle steamers, and flour mills, new schools and hospitals, hotels and vineyards and police stations. This collective group of men helped build the foundations of what modern Albury now looks like, they gave the area a voice in Sydney and helped shape Albury as a significant regional centre in NSW.”
