An investigation is underway after more than half a million dollars worth of opals were stolen during a home invasion in the Illawarra overnight.
Police say that shortly after 1am on Wednesday, four unknown people broke into a home on the Princes Highway, Albion Park Rail, and demanded opal stones from the occupant’s personal collection.
“The occupants complied, and the four people left in a dark sedan with a large collection of opals,” NSW Police said in a statement.
“Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District attended and established a crime scene, which was examined by specialist forensic officers.
“Detectives have commenced an investigation with the opals believed to be worth in excess of $500,000.”
Police say no one was physically injured during the incident.
