Southport assault charges upgrade after victim passes away

A 32-year-old Coombabah man who was charged with the grievous bodily harm of a 62-year-old man at Southport on Saturday has had his charge upgraded after the victim passed away in hospital today.

In a statement, Queensland Police said it will be alleged that around 11.30pm on 22 November, the two men were talking at the intersection of Scarborough Street and Railway Street when the 32-year-old man punched the 62-year-old in the face.

“The 62-year-old man fell to the ground, striking his head on the pavement. He was transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital where he has since passed away this morning,” Police said.

“The 32-year-old Coombabah man was initially charged with one count of grievous bodily harm, but that charge has now been upgraded to one count of striking causing death.”

He is scheduled to reappear at the Southport Magistrates Court tomorrow.
