The Victorian Government is extending the Free Tram Zone and delivering additional services as the state gears up for footy finals and the Melbourne Royal Show.
Minister for Public and Active Transport, Gabrielle Williams, today announced the Free Tram Zone will be extended to the MCG and hundreds of extra services will be delivered for passengers to get to and from the Melbourne Royal Show.
“With footy finals and the Melbourne Royal Show coming to town, we are delivering extra train and tram services to get you there,” said Ms Williams.
“We encourage everyone to plan ahead and take public transport to the ‘G or the Show.”
From Wednesday, September 25th, the Free Tram Zone will be extended to the MCG along routes 48, 70 and 75, so passengers can head to the Footy Festival at Yarra Park.
For the AFL Grand Final eve public holiday on Friday, September 27th, all public transport will run to a Saturday timetable – with 47 extra train services operating, along with additional tram services on Flinders Street to get fans to the AFL Grand Final Parade.
On Grand Final Day, there will be 56 train services added to Metropolitan lines – 16 prior to the first bounce, and 40 after the final siren.
Extra trams will operate on routes 12, 48, 70 and 75 along Collins and Flinders Streets, with additional services also added on the V/Line network.
More than 100 extra train services will be running every day as 450,000 Victorians are expected to descend on the Melbourne Royal Show – departing Flinders Street every 10-15 minutes from platforms 8 and 9 from 9:10am.
The last train from the Showgrounds departs at 10.40pm on weekdays and 10.30pm on weekends – in addition to extra tram services for Route 57 which travel between Elizabeth Street and the Showgrounds.
Additional metropolitan and regional train services will run for passengers attending the Geelong Cats and Brisbane Lions preliminary final at the MCG this Saturday night – with six extra trains set to be added to the Geelong Line.
