The Gulf Savannah region of north-west Queensland is a tapestry of rugged landscapes, rich history and unparalleled experiences. Step back in time on the legendary Gulflander, affectionately known as the ‘Tin Hare’. This historic train travels along the heritage-listed railway line between Normanton and Croydon through the rugged Gulf Savannah country.
From wetlands and grasslands to the arid Savannah, the 1950 railmotor ventures through countryside that most people would never see – offering a rail journey unlike any other.

Said to go from “nowhere to nowhere”, this heritage-listed railway line opened in 1891. Originally built to connect the once bustling river port of Normanton with the rich gold fields of Croydon. Still measured in miles, the line was built to withstand almost anything – including floods and termites. The construction of the line is an ingenious engineering feat, and even today, retains most of the original rail and sleepers.

Built in 1889, and a true oasis among the salt plains of the Norman River, Normanton railway station is a heritage-listed treasure trove of history and architecture. Take time to enjoy a self-guided walk around the station precinct and explore the museum, vintage locomotives, wagons, carriages, buildings and gardens. Along the walk you will find stories about the station and the trains which operated along the railway line.

Each journey provides its own blend of history, scenery and charm, offering varying options to suit any type of Savannah visitor! A range of captivating experiences are available during the season, including the Gulflander Classic Experience, Critters Camp Excursion, and the Croydon Golden Sunset Tour. Your driver and guide will entertain you along the way with unique insights about local history and points of interest as you travel through country.
A trip on the Gulflander is more than a rail journey – it’s a once in a lifetime experience for young and old, and a must-do when travelling in the Gulf Savannah region.
