Thurgoona Senior Open set to tee off this month

The largest SParms PGA Legends Tour field in almost three years is ready to contest this month’s NSW Senior Open at Thurgoona Golf and Country Club Resort.

Golf fans in the Albury-Border region are in for a treat with almost 150 players already entered for the 54-hole $120,000 tournament, which will get underway on October 28th.

Several Australian golfing legends are ready to light up the fairways, and with international border restrictions easing, a couple of foreign competitors will also be part of the action.

“As soon as we announced the tournament was back on the schedule, we had enquires from everywhere, even a couple from players ready to travel from North America,” Golf NSW Chief Operating Officer Graeme Phillipson said.

“It’s a thrill to know interest in the Senior Open is growing and it’s especially pleasing to hear how keen they are to travel and compete post-COVID.”

Making the trek from North America is Canada’s Ken Tarling, while Shaquill Mongol and Barry Conser will fly the US flag.

With an entry list that already reads like a who’s who of Australian golf, this year’s edition of the NSW Senior Open contains no less than four Australian Open Champions, three Australian Masters Champions, and multiple Australian PGA Champions from the 1990s and 2000s.

An increase of $20,000 to the purse from the 2019 event also makes it one of the richest events on the SParms PGA Legends Tour.

2019 Champion Brad Burns returns to defend his crown; however, he will face plenty of opposition from the likes of Peter Senior, Peter Lonard, Andre Stolz, Peter Fowler, and Mike Harwood. All of them have snared more than a fair share of Aussie golf’s finest silverware throughout their illustrious careers.

2007 NSW Open Champion Jason Norris adds some depth to the field also. The South Australian, a four-time winner on the ISPS Handa PGA Tour of Australasia (which included a win in the European Tour Co-Sanctioned Fiji International in 2017), will be making his debut in the SParms PGA Legends Tour Ranks.

The $120,000 NSW Senior Open will be played over 54 holes at Thurgoona Country Club Resort, Albury, from October 28th to 30th.

Spectator Entry is free.

The NSW Senior Open is supported by the NSW Government via its tourism and
major events agency, Destination NSW.
