On-site works have begun on a worker accommodation project in the town of Koroit in western Victoria, Moyne Shire Council announced today.
Moyne Shire Deputy Mayor, Councillor Daniel Meade today broke ground on the project which will see five studio cabins installed at the Koroit Caravan Park to accommodate workers in key industries.
The project has been made possible with a $465,000 Victorian Government grant and a $200,000 contribution from Council.
Work is expected to be completed by the end of August.
Cr Meade said expressions of interest for bookings were now open and Council was keen to
hear from key industries and businesses struggling to find accommodation for their staff.
“We know there is a major shortage of housing in our region and that in turn leads to labour shortages. These cabins are one way Council is working towards easing some of that pressure and putting practical solutions in place,” he said.
“The State Government has also recognised the issues our region is facing. They have listened to what we have been saying in our advocacy and have responded positively through Regional Development Victoria and we thank them for that collaborative relationship.”
Each cabin boasts a queen-sized bed, living space with a couch, kitchenette with cooking
facilities, ensuite, flat-screen TV, air conditioning and use of shared facilities like laundries and barbeque.
Cr Meade said similar cabins installed at the Mortlake Caravan Park late last year are now fully booked for the next six months with workers from industries in the area.
“Mortlake has shown how successful this model is and has highlighted the flow on impacts for every business in the town.”
“It means there are extra people in town going to the supermarket, buying fuel, having a drink or a meal – and it means businesses can attract workers. It’s a win-win.
“The additional benefit is when they are not being used for worker accommodation, they will be available to be booked by tourists, adding to accommodation options in both towns,” he said.
