An 83-year-old woman has died after being struck by a vehicle in Tugun on Saturday evening.
Police say that just before 7pm on Saturday, emergency services were called to the scene following reports a woman had been hit by a black Mazda 3 hatchback on Teemangum Street.
“The woman was transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital for treatment,” Queensland Police said in a statement.
“The driver, a 30-year-old Currumbin man allegedly initially left the scene but was located by police a short time later. He is assisting police with their inquiries.”
He was issued with a notice to appear for mid-range drink driving and will appear at Coolangatta Magistrates Court on March 25th, and continues to assist police with their investigations, Police said.
The pedestrian, an 83-year-old woman visiting from overseas, was transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition, where she passed away last night.
The Forensic Crash Unit is appealing for any witnesses or anyone with relevant dashcam footage or CCTV to come forward.
