The Territory Government will build a multi-storey carpark at the Alice Springs Hospital, Minister for Health, Natasha Fyles has announced.
Ms Fyles said up to 65 local jobs would be supported through the construction of the multi-storey carpark with local business Sunbuild awarded the $13 million tender.
“The development will accommodate 250 cars and provide much needed additional on-site car parking for staff and public at the Alice Springs Hospital,” she said.
Construction of the multi-storey carpark will begin in mid 2021 and should be operational in early 2022.
“We promised safe parking for employees, patients and visitors of the Alice Springs Hospital,” the Minister said.
“At times when families are under a lot of stress attending the hospital, this car park will help to make the burden a little easier.
“We have acknowledged for some time that hospital car parking has been an issue. This is why it has been incorporated into the development of the Masterplan.”
Minister for Central Australian Economic Reconstruction, Chansey Paech said the government’s top priority was creating local jobs post-pandemic.
“The hospital car park and new staff accommodation projects will support more than 175 local jobs during construction and support a further 465 indirect jobs,” said Minister Paech.
“Work is also well underway on the new staff accommodation, which is about retaining our hardworking health professionals, while attracting more people to stay in Alice Springs.”
