Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein says he will work with Football Tasmania to establish an A-League team in the state.
Mr Gutwein said a Tasmanian franchise would deliver the A-League a “truly national” competition.
“We have seen strong growth in football participation in recent years in Tasmania, and the Government believes the next logical step is for Tasmania to have an A-League team of its own,” the Premier said.
“Any sporting competition is not truly national without Tasmania in it and on the back of entering the NBL later this year, this is our chance to further make our mark on the national sporting stage.
“I have recently met with Football Tasmania and provided our strong support for this to proceed.
“Tasmanians deserve the same opportunity as other states in providing a pathway for elite football in our State, and we stand ready to assist however we can as they work with A-League management to progress their bid.”
Acting Minister for Sport and Recreation, Sarah Courtney said nearly 40,000 Tasmanians play football, more than any other team sport in the State.
“Football has a great future in Tasmania, and an A-League team of our own would be another positive step forward in recognising our State as a true national competitor,” Acting Minister Courtney said.
“We are already punching above our weight on the national sporting stage, and an A-League franchise based in Tasmania would further cement our growing reputation.
“Elite level sports are also very important for our events strategy and will help position Tasmania as a destination of choice for visitors.
“It will also create significant opportunities to develop our local talent, while creating jobs and providing significant economic benefits to Tasmania.”
