Charges laid over Salthouse crash

A 33-year-old man from Ngunnawal has been charged over the death of 71-year-old disability advocate and ACT Senior Australian of the Year, Sue Salthouse (pictured, front) in July.

The man is due to appear before the ACT Magistrates Court on Friday, December 18 to face charges of culpable driving causing death and drug driving.

The charges have been issued at the conclusion of an ACT Policing Major Collision Team investigation into the death of Ms Salthouse following a collision on Commonwealth Avenue Bridge on Monday, 20 July.

Named ACT’s 2020 Senior Australian of the Year, Ms Salthouse was a long-term and well-known advocate for people with disabilities and former Italian school teacher in the capital.

Ms Salthouse was reportedly riding her wheelchair accessible motorcycle when she collided with a car on Commonwealth Avenue Bridge on July 20.

ACT Policing said “the motorcycle rider was treated at the scene by ACT Ambulance Service Paramedics, however died at hospital”.

Herself a paraplegic since breaking her back in a horse fall in 1995, Ms Salthouse was co-chair of the ACT Disability Expert Panel, and former president of Women with Disabilities Australia.
