Stolen meteorite lands back with owners

A $20,000 missing meteorite has been returned to its rightful earthly owners after the space rock was stolen from a Cairns property back in 2015.

The meteorite was taken from an Atherton Tableland museum when two men broke into the Main Street premises five years ago.

Police investigations led officers to search a Moorobool property on Saturday, where the 11kg meteorite was located.

Cairns detectives charged a 46-year-old man over the theft of the hefty piece of space debris. He will face Cairns Magistrates Court on November 25.

The 11kg rock has now been returned to its owners where it will go back on display at the museum in Atherton.
