RSPCA South Australia is appealing for public help after a black Kelpie was found tethered to a tree with severe head injuries, with staff saying they believe the dog had been struck multiple times with a splitting hatchet.
The female Kelpie was discovered by a member of the public at the Nairne Golf Course just inside the boundary adjacent to Old Princes Hwy, Nairne at around 1pm on Sunday March 21st.
The hatchet used to harm the dog was also found at the scene and is undergoing forensic testing by South Australia Police.
RSPCA suspect the incident occurred sometime between 4pm on March 21st and 1pm on Sunday March 22nd.

The dog has no identification and is believed to have been tethered to the tree for less than 24 hours. She was transported to RSPCA SA’s Animal Care Campus at O’Halloran Hill for surgery and is recovering well, staff confirmed.
Anyone with any information that could assist with this investigation is urged to contact RSPCA’s emergency hotline on 1300 477 722.
The RSPCA says it is particularly interested in any information about where the dog has come from, noting that she may have been stolen or straying at the time with her owners potentially unaware.
Furthermore, if anyone saw a vehicle parked at this location or any person/s loitering in the area on the Saturday night or Sunday morning prior to her discovery, please contact RSPCA’s emergency hotline immediately on 1300 477 722.
