Tasmanian Police are renewing their call for public information to determine what happened to 20-year-old, Helen Munnings (pictured), who disappeared from Burnie 15 years ago.
“This year marks the 15-year anniversary of the disappearance of Helen Munnings who was last seen on 23 July 2008 on Marine Terrace in Burnie when she was 20-years-old,” Commander Stuart Wilkinson said in a statement today.
Police say that shortly before she disappeared, Helen had told her boyfriend, local man, Adam Taylor, that she was pregnant with his child.
The pair then reportedly took a drive together. Taylor says he then dropped off Helen on the highway back at Burnie, because she wanted to go for a walk, “to clear her head.”
Police strongly suspect that Helen was murdered and a reward for $500,000 remains on offer for information which leads to the conviction of a person or people involved in Helen’s death.
In 2012, the Coroner determined Helen died in Burnie on or about 23 July 2008.
“The police investigation into the disappearance of Helen Munnings remains open and ongoing and police continue to believe there are people in the community with information in relation to the circumstances around Helen’s death and the location of her remains,” said Commander Wilkinson.
“15 years have passed since Helen disappeared, and with a $500,000 reward on offer, I strongly hope that with the passing of time, personal circumstances may have changed that will enable someone to provide the information we required to bring closure for Helen’s family and loved ones.
“I implore anyone with information, no matter how small, to come forward – it may be the piece we need to arrest and prosecute the person or people responsible for Helen’s suspected murder.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact Burnie CIB on 131 444 of Crime Stoppers Tasmania. Payment of the reward, or any portion thereof, shall be at the sole discretion of the Commissioner of Police.
