Three police officers have been injured while rescuing a 60-year-old man from a fire in his South Mackay home overnight.

Police say that just after 10.30pm last night, officers responded to the McDonald Street unit block where the man’s home was fully alight.

“Police forced entry to the building through a window after hearing the 60-year-old man inside,”Queensland Police said in a statement.

“The three officers rescued him from the building and immediately commenced first aid.

“He was later transported to hospital with significant burns to his body.

“The senior constable and two constables were also assessed for smoke inhalation suffered as a result of rescuing the man.

“A crime scene has since been established with further investigations being conducted today to determine the cause of the fire.”

Anyone who observed any suspicious activity around McDonald Street between 10pm and 10.30pm is encouraged to contact police.
