Police hunt for Melbourne’s ‘sorry’ carjacker

Victoria Police have released a new image of the man they are seeking over the brazen carjacking of a couple out delivering newspapers in Melbourne’s inner city that ended with the man saying “sorry” to one of his victims.

Police have described the couple’s ordeal as “terrifying” after a man allegedly stole the couple’s car, not realising a 70-year-old woman was still inside.

The woman and her 70-year-old husband were on their routine newspaper delivery run last Thursday when the incident happened.

Acting Detective Sargent Holly Anderson said two men pulled up to the couple’s silver Kia in a black Nissan, before one man jumped into the couple’s car after her husband, who had been driving, got out to deliver a paper on Abinger Road in Richmond at around 7.10am.

Police say the man drove a short distance before noticing the woman and asked her what she was doing there. He then reportedly apologised, before dumping the car and running away into a nearby reserve.

The woman was not injured during the incident and it’s understood he hit the man during the incident.

“She fought back quite bravely,” Acting Detective Sargent Anderson said.
