Police crackdown on poor driver behaviour

More than 130 infringements have been issued by police during a large-scale traffic enforcement operation targeting poor driver behaviour in Sydney’s north-west this weekend.

Operation Fume was conducted by officers from the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command North West Sector, with assistance from The Hills, Parramatta and Ryde Police Area Commands on Friday and Saturday.

“During the operation, 133 infringement notices were issued, six vehicles were issued with defect notices, six criminal charges and four traffic charges were laid,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“Police conducted 678 breath tests, with two people charged with drink-driving offences – including one for mid-range PCA and one for high range PCA.”

As part of the operation, Parramatta Highway Patrol detected a Ford Falcon sedan on Gilba Road, Girraween, travelling at 87km/h in a 50km/h marked zone. After speaking with the driver, checks revealed the 51-year-old man had an expired licence and was disqualified from driving, and that stolen number plates were attached to the car.

The man was arrested and taken to Parramatta Police Station where he was charged with drive motor vehicle during disqualification period – second offence, use class A vehicle with unauthorised number plate affixed, receive/dispose stolen property, possess/attempt to, prescribed restricted substance, and class A motor vehicle exceed speed (more than 30 km/h).

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court this week.

In another incident, police say that at around 9:35pm on Saturday, officers from The Hills Highway Patrol were conducting patrols at Freeman Avenue, Castle Hill when they stopped a white Holden Commodore and spoke to the driver, a 37-year-old man.

“Officers conducted a search of the car when they located a number of allegedly stolen identification documents and other items including a mobile phone,” police said.

“The man was arrested and taken to Castle Hill Police Station where he was charged with goods in personal custody suspected being stolen (not motor vehicle). He was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Bail Court today.”

Operation Fume is a road policing operation targeting criminal and alcohol related, anti-social behaviour and road related trauma.
