Two men – aged 45 and 51 – have been charged overnight after two police officers were allegedly assaulted in the state’s Riverina region.
Police say that just after 1.15am, officers from Riverina Police District were called to a home on Hurley Street in Cootamundra, following reports of a neighbour dispute.
Police will allege a 45-year-old man, who was armed with a knife, threatened officers and became verbally abusive.
“Following directions to drop the knife, he complied, before allegedly assaulting officers during his arrest,” NSW Police said in a statement.
“A 51-year-old man then left the home and also allegedly verbally abused and assaulted the officers before he, too, was arrested.”
Both men were taken to Cootamundra Police Station where the 45-year-old man was charged with multiple offences in relation to the alleged incident.
He was refused bail to appear in Cowra Local Court today.
The older man was charged with assault officer in execution of duty, and use offensive language in/near public place/school.
He was granted conditional bail to appear in Cootamundra Local Court on June 6.
NSW Police says the two senior constables involved in the incident did not require medical treatment.
