Man to face court over bowling club robbery with samurai sword

A man will face court today as investigations continue into an alleged armed robbery on the Mid North Coast last month that saw a 67-year-old employee threatened with a knife and samurai sword.

Police say that at around 8.15pm on Sunday, July 25, the 67-year-old worker was inside a bowling club on Combined Street, Wingham, when three men – allegedly armed with knives and a samurai sword – entered the club.

“Two of the men demanded cash from the employee before he was injured with a knife,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“The third man approached a 43-year-old male patron and allegedly threatened him with a sword. During an altercation, the patron was able to wrestle the weapon from the armed man.”

All three men then fled the scene in a Volkswagen Tiguan, which has since been recovered.

“The employee and patron received minor hand injuries and were taken to Manning Base Hospital for treatment,” NSW Police said.

Yesterday morning, officers arrested a 35-year-old man on Valarie Street in Taree. He was taken to Taree Police Station where he was charged with two counts of armed robbery. The Taree man was refused bail to appear at Foster Local Court today.

“As investigations continue, police would like to speak to two other men they believe may be able to assist them with their inquiries,” NSW Police said.

Police are urging anyone who may have dashcam footage from the surrounding area between 8pm and 8.30pm or who may have seen or heard anything to contact Taree Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
