Man charged with assault of paramedics and ambulance theft

A 56-year-old man has been charged with the alleged assault of two paramedics and theft of their ambulance at Buxton overnight.

The man was charged with two counts each of serious assault of a public officer performing fuction and wilful damage and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

Police will allege that at around 10.30pm on Saturday the man was being transported by the ambulance crew at Gregory Street when he punched a male paramedic and threw an item at the female paramedic driving the ambulance.

“Both paramedics tactically withdrew from the ambulance and requested urgent police assistance,” Queensland Police said in a statement.

The 56-year-old allegedly drove away in the ambulance, which police located a short distance away in Hull Street, where he was taken him into custody.

The male paramedic suffered non-life-threatening injuries and the female paramedic was not injured.

He has been denied police bail and will appear in Bundaberg Magistrates Court tomorrow.
