Police have charged a 59-year-old man after a stolen caravan containing three children crashed at Tallai yesterday afternoon.
In a statement, Police said that at around 5.30pm, the man attended a Glenrowan address in a Nissan X-Trail where he attached a 1.5 tonne caravan, which was parked in the driveway, to the rear of his vehicle using a ratchet strap.
“A 40-year-old woman, who is known to the man, and her three children – a 7-year-old, 5-year-old and 2-year-old – were on board the caravan at the time. The woman’s pet dog was underneath,” Police said.
“The woman exited the caravan, at which time the man allegedly towed it onto Worongary Road, injuring the dog.
“The caravan gained momentum down the hill, moving passed the X-Trail, before both vehicles crashed into a ditch approximately 80 metres from the driveway.”
Police say the woman then climbed on top of the crashed caravan and was able to retrieve her children through a sky-light. All three children were uninjured in the incident. The dog, a female rottweiler, sustained leg and head injuries.
The 59-year-old driver was transported to hospital as a precaution. He has now been charged with one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
He is due to appear at the Southport Magistrates Court on 10 November.
