Man arrested over alleged machete assault on police officer

A 29-year-old man has been charged after Queensland Police say he swung a machete at an officer during an arrest in Woodridge yesterday.

At around 3.20pm, Police were called to a Kingston Road address following reports of a break and enter in progress.

“Upon arrival, officers allegedly observed a man on the patio of a home before he attempted to run from the scene,” Queensland Police said in a statement.

“Police began a foot chase and attempted to grab the man, who allegedly turned and swung a machete stolen from the address, striking a male Senior Constable’s hand.”

The officer suffered a laceration to his finger and was transported to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a stable condition for treatment, and he has since been discharged.

A 29-year-old Murrarie man was taken into custody. He has been charged with one count each of serious assault of a police officer causing bodily harm whilst armed, grievous bodily harm, enter dwelling and commit, possession of a knife in public and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

His bail has been refused, and he is expected to appear before Beenleigh Magistrates Court today.
