A 65-year-old Sydney man appeared in Downing Centre Local Court yesterday, after allegedly making threats against Sydney Airport.
Australian Federal Police (AFP) allege that on May 23rd, an airline call centre received a call from a traveller about her recent experience. During the call, a man is allegedly heard making threats against Sydney Airport in the background.
The airline call centre reported the matter to the AFP for investigation.
AFP Detective Acting Superintendent Daniel Hunt said any threat to an airline or the airport precinct was dealt with swiftly.
“The AFP provides an immediate response to any threat to the airport or airlines, including investigating and apprehending those offenders responsible,” Det A/Supt Hunt added.
“These matters are not taken lightly. Threats like this can cause a substantial loss of resources and time for the airline, and the airport. It also jeopardises the safety of members of the public, airport workers and the authorities who need to investigate the incident thoroughly.”
AFP officers attended the home of the man in Bondi and issued him a court attendance notice. The man was charged with threatening to destroy, damage or endanger the safety of a commonwealth aerodrome. The maximum penalty for this offence is 10 years’ imprisonment.
