Man, 65 assaulted at tram stop

Transit Crime Investigation Unit detectives are hoping to identify two men after a 65-year-old man was assaulted at a tram stop in Melbourne’s CBD last month.

Police say the victim was waiting for a tram at Stop 7 on Elizabeth Street when the incident occurred about 6pm on December 1.

“He witnessed two passengers on a nearby tram purposely hold the doors open, so the tram could not take off,” Victoria Police said in a statement.

“The victim asked the men to let go of the doors, and they approached him and assaulted him.”

Police say both men then boarded the number 19 tram to North Coburg and exited at stop 19 on Brunswick Road, Brunswick.

“The victim sustained serious injuries during the incident and was transported to hospital for treatment.”

Investigators have released CCTV and images of two men who they believe can assist with their enquiries.

The first man is Caucasian, aged mid to late 20s, with a thin build and brown shoulder length hair. He was wearing a dark-coloured short sleeve shirt, beige shorts and sneakers.

The second man is Caucasian, aged late 20s to early 30s, with a thin build and short bleached hair. He was wearing a navy shirt with rolled up sleeves, navy shorts, white runners and was carrying an orange hi-vis beanie.

Anyone who recognises the men or witnessed the assault is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or file a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
