Man, 20, charged over baseball bat attack on 72-year-old driver

Detectives have arrested a 20-year-old man who they say took a baseball bat to the vehicle of a 72-year-old driver in a shopping centre carpark attack.

Police say that just before 2pm on November 7, the man pulled in to park outside a chemist on Waldron Street alongside another vehicle.

“He stepped out of a blue Mercedes Benz C200, taking a red baseball bat from the backseat of the vehicle and proceeded to smash a grey 2009 Holden Cruze,” Queensland Police said in a statement.

The 72-year-old driver of the Holden Cruze received lacerations to his face, after the man allegedly smashed the Holden’s front window on the driver’s side, and the front passenger window.

“It is further alleged the incident arose from an earlier verbal altercation between the victim and a female passenger of the Mercedes,” Police said.

“Following the incident an investigation was undertaken by the Crime and Intelligence Command’s Organised Crime Gangs Group.

“On December 15, police executed a search warrant at a Tamborine address where a 20-year-old man was arrested in relation to the incident. Drugs and property were also seized during the search.”

The Tamborine man was charged with one count each of assault occasioning bodily harm whilst armed, entering a vehicle with intent, wilful damage, possessing property suspected as proceeds and four counts of possessing drugs.

“Investigators are appealing for anyone who was at the shopping centre carpark on Waldron Street between 1 – 2pm who witnessed the events or has recordings to come forward.”

The man is expected to appear in Beenleigh Magistrates Court today.
